San Jose is the largest city in Santa Clara County, and for Medicare purposes that mostly means volume. More people turning 65, more mail, more agents calling, and more plans to sort through than in the counties south of here.
Sixteen plans is a comparison problem, not a luxury
Santa Clara County has 16 Medicare Advantage plans available for 2026. Neighboring Monterey County has 5. Someone in San Jose is choosing from roughly three times the options a person an hour south is looking at, and that cuts both ways: the right plan is more likely to exist here, and it is harder to find on your own. We do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information we provide is limited to those plans we do offer in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.
Start from the doctors, not the brochure
The single question that eliminates most plans fastest is which providers you want to keep. Networks differ plan to plan and change year to year, so a plan that covered your medical group in 2025 is not guaranteed to in 2026. We check that first, because it is the answer that makes most of the list irrelevant.
- The doctors and specialists you actually see, by name
- Your prescriptions and dosages, since that drives the formulary comparison
- Whether you travel, which changes how much the network footprint matters
Free counseling exists, and you should use it
Santa Clara County's HICAP program is delivered by Sourcewise, which offers free, unbiased Medicare counseling to any county resident. They do not sell anything. We do, and we would still rather you use both: they answer general questions, and we compare specific plans against your specific doctors.
The California birthday rule applies here too
It is a statewide right, so it works the same in San Jose as anywhere else in California. If you already carry a Medigap policy, the full mechanic is on our California birthday rule page.
