Medicare guidance for Salinas and Monterey County, without the sales pitch.

Salinas is the largest city in our California service area. That means the guidance has to earn your time, not just show up first in a search.

Salinas is the largest city in our California service area, and a Monterey County Medicare shopper deserves guidance that's specific to this county rather than generic. That's what the rest of this page is built around.

Monterey County has its own counseling program

Free Medicare counseling in Monterey County runs through Alliance on Aging, a nonprofit with an office at 247 Main Street in Salinas, phone (831) 758-4011. That's a third distinct provider in the broader region we serve, different again from Santa Clara County's Sourcewise and Santa Cruz County's Senior Network Services. Each county genuinely has its own free counseling organization, not a shared statewide call center, and getting the right one on the phone matters. What we add, comparing specific plans against your actual doctors and prescriptions and then handling enrollment, is a different service, not a competing one.

Why a bigger market gets more scrutiny, not less

A larger population usually means more agencies chasing the same search terms, and Salinas is no exception. That's a reason to look harder at who's actually independent versus who's representing one carrier's book of business dressed up as local advice. We're independent, which means the plans we bring you aren't narrowed down to whichever company happens to employ the person on the phone.

No storefront here, and no pretending otherwise

Salinas doesn't have an MC Insurance office, and pretending that's a small detail would undercut the whole point of this page. What actually happens instead: a scheduled phone or video call where we go through your doctors and prescriptions the same way we would sitting across a desk, then compare Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement against what you already carry.

The California birthday rule works the same here

Whatever county you're in, California's birthday rule applies identically, and it doesn't matter which county you bought the original plan in. The full mechanic is on our California birthday rule page.

Plan lineups are filed county by county, and they reset yearly

Medicare Advantage plans are approved at the county level, so Monterey County's lineup is separate from either Santa Clara or Santa Cruz County's. We do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information we provide is limited to those plans we do offer in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options. The carriers we're appointed with are listed in full on our carriers page, and we'll tell you plainly when your current plan already beats anything new we could bring you.

  • Who your doctors and specialists are, so we can rule out any plan that doesn't include them
  • What's on your medication list right now, dosages included, since formularies change year to year
  • Whatever plan mail or renewal notices you've gotten recently, even the ones you set aside

Salinas being the largest city in this group doesn't change how the review itself works. It just means we don't assume a plan recommendation is right simply because it showed up first in a search or a mailer. We check it against what you actually bring us before we say so, every time.

A Question Worth Answering Directly

Does your doctor take this plan?

The honest answer depends on which kind of coverage you're comparing, since Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement work differently here.

A Medicare Advantage plan builds its own network of doctors and hospitals, structured as either an HMO or a PPO. An HMO generally requires you to stay inside that network and get a referral to see a specialist. A PPO gives you room to go outside the network, usually at a higher cost. Either way, a doctor being listed in a plan's network this year isn't a permanent fact. Provider directories can and do change during the year as doctors join or leave a plan, sometimes with little notice, so a listing from January isn't guaranteed to still be accurate by fall.

Original Medicare paired with a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy works differently. There's no network to check. You can generally see any doctor or hospital nationwide who accepts Medicare, which is the large majority of providers, without a referral.

You can check any plan's current network yourself, for free, using Medicare's own Medicare Plan Finder at medicare.gov/plan-compare. Enter your specific doctors and current prescriptions, and it shows which plans in your area actually include them, using the same data plans are required to keep current. We work from that same information when we compare plans for you, and we'll walk through what it shows either way.
